STACIAN

STACIAN is recording artist, composer and performer Maren Stacian.  With synthesizers, drum machines, and other electronics, along with voice and video, the STACIAN sound is rooted in minimalism, mysticism, and punk ethos.

Taking influence from the theatrics of Kate Bush and David Bowie, the industrial simplicity of Kraftwerk and Chris & Cosey, and the confrontational edge of punk bands like Malaria! and Maximum Joy, STACIAN conjures an anthemic cold wave worthy of only the foggiest dance floors.

Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Stacian spent some formative years in Chicago (2004-2009) where she experienced the local punk and diy music scene, encountering bands like The Coughs, Cave, Chandeliers, Unmanned Ship, Scalpels, and others within the underground experimental and electronics-based music scene.  Experimenting  with  any cheap electronics that could be found, casio keyboards, circuit bent toys and drum machines, sounds were distorted and modified through various effects pedals. STACIAN came to be in 2007, releasing a handful of severely limited run cassettes between 2007 and 2010. During this time, Stacian also collaborated with various experimental groups such as Casual Encounter and Positive Feedback. Equipment upgrades guided the sound of STACIAN and after a Roland Jupiter 6 and TR-606 entered the picture in 2010, the debut full-length album "Songs For Cadets" was released in 2012. This album paired with the “Pul” 7 inch released the year prior on the now-defunct Moniker Records represents a kind of launchpad for the STACIAN sound.  A desire to go even further with electronics and recording prompted Stacian in 2015 to pursue a master's degree in  Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College in Oakland where her thesis explored music therapy and its role in the treatment of emotional trauma. At Mills, Stacian experimented with Supercollider, handmade electronics, and bridging the gap between electronics and software. Upon the 2017 release of “Person L” on Night School Records, the STACIAN sound seemed fully realized. Four years later saw the release of “Fractal ID” on Clear Records.

Stacian’sother projects include Sabiya, an improvisational recording project realized with Nicole Baksinskas; Cloner, an partial improv performance project with Jules of Waxy Tomb; Bananananananalog, an improv electronics performance collaboration with  fellow Mills alum Kim Nucci, and sparse electronics generated by Supercollider inaptly dubbed Person L.

Once a radio host on WMSE in Milwaukee from 2013 to 2015, Stacian founded the show Wave Tank which showcased various genres of electronic music with some focus on the darker and moodier realms of synth music.  Under the pseudonym Luck Croix since 2017, Stacian DJs an array of musical influences proximal to genres of electronic music: industrial, cold wave, no wave, funk punk, glam rock, death rock, and more.
